With Kids In Charge, Kids Choose MaxFlight

There is something new under the sun in Tampa, Florida. When the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), decided to grow, by creating a children’s expansion, they wanted an advisory board that could genuinely grasp the concept of learning through play, the feel of “what’s fun” creative thinking and the true heights of a child’s imagination. The solution proved to be an inspiration. So when the 40,000 square foot extension opened on July 8th 2005, “Kids In Charge!” was more than the name of the newest, largest Children’s Science Center in the nation, it was an accurate description of the creative process.

MOSI’s “Eureka” moment came when the development team, in searching for the best input from educators, consultants, parents and visitors, realized they were surrounded by experts, little experts everywhere. A simple idea: “Let’s put the kids in charge” became the dynamic that lead to establishing an advisory board of children. 26 kids, ages 10 to 17 make up the committee that proved invaluable. More than just a novelty, this board was hands-on, conducting audience research on different exhibits, acting as ambassadors in the community and providing ideas and feedback on space, exhibits, architectural design, programming and fundraising. The result is a cutting edge, child inspired, uniquely designed space for kids, adding to MOSI’s 265,000 square foot facility set on 74 acres, the largest science center in the southeastern US.

Featured prominently at Kids In Charge!, right under an authentic Red Baron Biplane, are two MaxFlight Dually Flight Simulators. “One of the kids on the advisory board rode a MaxFlight at the Smithsonian and could not wait until we got them here”, says Tanya Vomacka, MOSI Advertising and Communications Manager. This youthful board agreed that the sims would be “a great idea”, and the visitor reaction has been overwhelming. “Hands down our most popular guest comment after riding the simulator, from people of all ages, has been…‘Awesome!’, says Vomacka.

The MaxFlight Dually is a two-passenger simulator with guests’ choice of Flight Sim or Virtual Roller Coaster software. Pilot-controlled flight or choose-your- ride roller coaster motion provides a variety of rides, from mild to wild, suitable to every passenger’s preference. “It fits in perfectly in the Kids Create! section at Kids In Charge!,” says Vomacka, “as guests are in charge of their flight and create their own ride.”

The simplicity of choice and proven high performance has allowed MaxFlight to continually grow in popularity worldwide. These fully interactive rides offer the excitement of a hang-on-to-your-hats thrill ride in a compact, indoor setting. In flight sim mode riders enter a fully enclosed cabin, strap in and take-off in a two-axis motion-based flight, actually doing every maneuver they make with the authentic controls. The sleek two-seat cab rises 12 feet into the air, and realistically responds with real banks, loops, dives and spins. The roller coaster mode allows the customer to piece together their own journey through a futuristic space asteroid roller coaster, then sit back and actually do every jump, flip, spin and spiral that they see before them on a huge 58 inch screen. The ride is so realistic passengers even feel the rush of wind in their faces. MaxFlight Corporation, a New Jersey-based company, has simulators in a wide variety of venues in dozens of countries around the globe.
